Snowshoe and Hotdog Roast: Explore and Discover Winter Landscapes

If you can walk, you can snowshoe. Snowshoeing allows people to experience winter by providing flotation on deep snow, making it an accessible and low-impact activity for both light walks and challenging hikes.

With over 36 km of groomed trails for both classic and skate skiing, A small portion (2 kms) of the trail is also lit for night skiing. 7.5km of shared xc and snowshoe trails and 5.0km of snowshoe only trails. Winter trail fees apply and summer use is by donation.

You are not going to want to miss snowshoeing in the Highland Valley….just keep an eye out for wild horses!

Grab some friends, your winter gear, a hot dog stick, and get ready to experience a magical day OR night under the stars.

One of the many amazing things that these trails have to offer is a 2km lit loop just on the outskirts of town. Accessible from the Breccia Trailhead this loop is meant for skiing or snowshoeing in the winter.

To access the Highland Valley Outdoor Association (HVOA) trails off Galena, drive northwest on Galena Ave from Logan Lake, then turn right onto Chartrand Ave. Follow Chartrand Ave northeast until Breccia, then head north on Breccia to the parking area where the trails begin. Be prepared for wilderness conditions, limited cell service, and potential hazards like dead trees and root holes from the 2021 wildfire, and always stay on marked paths.

Snowshoeing Gear
  • Snowshoes and Poles: Essential for travel over snow; use poles with snow baskets for better stability and propulsion.
  • Footwear: Insulated, waterproof, ankle-supporting boots are crucial for snowshoeing, not just regular winter boots.
  • Socks: Pack several pairs of wool or synthetic socks to keep your feet warm and dry. An extra pair is always a good idea.
  • Gaiters: These waterproof coverings for your boots and lower legs keep snow from getting inside your boots.
Clothing & Personal Items
  • Layers: Dress in non-cotton layers (wool or synthetics) so you can adjust to activity levels.
    • Base Layer: Moisture-wicking long underwear (top and bottom).
    • Mid-Layer: Fleece or down jacket for insulation.
    • Shell Layer: A waterproof and windproof coat and pants.

For a winter snowshoe and hot dog roast, bring snowshoes, poles, appropriate layering clothing (non-cotton wool or synthetic base layers, a mid-layer fleece or down jacket, and a waterproof shell), warm and waterproof boots with wool socks, a warm hat and mittens, sunglasses, sunscreen, a headlamp, navigation tools, and water and high-energy snacks.

For the roast, pack ingredients like hot dogs, buns, condiments, fire-starting materials, and fuel to cook. There may or may not be wood available at the oval.

Hot Dog Roast Items
  • Food: Hot dogs, buns, and your favorite condiments.
  • Cooking Equipment: A grill or a grate that can be placed over a campfire, along with fuel and fire-starting materials.
  • Utensils: Tongs, plates, napkins, and cooking utensils.
  • Waste Bags: To pack out any garbage and keep the area clean.
  • Camp Chairs: For comfortable seating around the fire.
