Hard Ice 101: Logan Lake Named 1 of 9 Best Ice Fishing Destinations

Yes, you can ice fish in Logan Lake, which is a world-class destination for Rainbow Trout during the winter months. Access is available from the campground area, but check for potential winterkills and other conditions before your trip, and always follow BC’s fishing regulations, including having a valid license and using barbless hooks. The best spots to fish are near weed lines, on flat shoals, and drop-off ledges.

Recognized as a world-class Rainbow Trout fishery, Logan Lake is located at the heart of the town named after the lake. As winter comes to the valley, the snow falls and the temperatures drop, Logan Lake becomes a winter wonderland. It’s hardly surprising that it’s also one of the best ice fishing destinations Canada has to offer.

The hard water season begins sometime around late December with the peak of Rainbow Trout fishing. Oxygen levels are still high, which makes the fish as hungry as ever. Rainbows hang out in relatively shallow areas, cruising the bottom in search of leeches, snails, and other invertebrates in muddy and weeded areas.

When to Go
  • Season: The hard water season for ice fishing generally begins in late December.
Target Species
Where to Fish
  • Shallow Areas: Look for trout cruising the bottom in relatively shallow areas.
  • Drop-Offs and Weed Lines: Target drop-off ledges and weed lines where fish find their food.
Techniques & Bait
  • Bait: Use baits such as maggots, earthworms, krill, or a kernel of canned corn.
  • Rig: Attach a sliding weight to your mainline above a barrel swivel, followed by a long leader with a baited hook.
  • Presentation: Suspend the bait around 60 cm off the bottom.
Safety First
  • Ice Thickness: Test the ice thickness with a spud bar or auger. A minimum of 10 cm (4 inches) is recommended for fishing alone, and 30 cm (12 inches) for a group.
  • Thin Ice Zones: Be aware that aeration projects can create thin ice or open water in various areas.
  • Know the Ice: Never assume ice is safe, as thickness can be inconsistent.

Location and Conditions
  • Location
